Sustainable Highways Self-Evaluation Tool

An ambitious effort by the FHWA to create a web-based self-evaluation tool for measuring sustainability over the life cycle of a transportation project or program is available in Beta.  The tool provides for self-evaluation from system and project planning through design, construction, and operations and maintenance
FHWA’s Associate Administrator for Planning, Gloria Shepherd, made a presentation about the self-evaluation tool at AASHTO’s annual meeting in October.  She noted that the tool is designed to:
• Encourage sustainable highway practices
• Help agencies measure sustainability and quantify tradeoffs
• Provide a framework for communicating with stakeholders about sustainability
• Establish a method for evaluating sustainable highways
The tool is not final. Its use is not required and is purely voluntary.  A PDF of the AASHTO presentation is available on-line. [PDF]
